I remember so many nights when "us kids" would go and blow the siren while Dad (Charles Johnson) go ready to leave on the truck. Back then, a cll would come into one specific house, and since were were almost across the road, it was often ours, and the siren would then be blowen to alert other firefighters so come to the firehouse.

Some additional Information: My father, Charles Johnson was an active member for close to 40 years. During that time He served as a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners, which I believe served both the Austerlitz and the Spencertown Fire Departments. I was a member of the fire dept. from the time I was old enough to join until the mid 70's. There might have been a gap in service for a while when I was in the service. I continued my membership, even though We didn't live in the Area, because we were building a camp on the hill behind My Father and Mother's home. I knew that many of the fire fighters were getting older and that many worked out of town, so I wanted to be able to help serve the community when I was in town. Incidentally, Our son Chuck, also became a volunteer fireman in Yorkville, NY. He looked up to his Grandfather and wanted to serve his community as his Grandfather did.

I was suprised to see this site. My Father, Charles Johnson, along with John Mackowski, Bob Mcnish, Ted Walinziak, maybe Dick Mugler, and others who I can't recall, were the founders of the Fire Co in the 1950's. I believe that the fire department was organized shortly after our barn burned and we had to wait for fire protection to come from Spencertown. The first truck, shown in the picture on your site, was a Model A ford beach truck that came from Coney Island. The young person in the middle, standing in the hose bed of the old model A fire truck was me. I wish I could identify others in the picture.
