I am looking for information on John Nimmo and Jane Arthur who sailed to New Zealand from Scotland in 1862. I believe Johns father was Thomas and he was married to Catherine Crawford. It is here that I am unsure of Thomas’ father. I think it could be Henry who married Margaret Forrester.

Hello, i am looking for information to add to the extensive family tree i have been compiling for a few years. I am looking at the Buchanan and Nimmo lines, originating between Glasgow and Edinburgh from George Nimmo born 1685 his son Thomas 1722-1800, his son also Thomas born 26th April 1753, his daughter Janet Nimmo born 1780. Janet's mother was Sarah Buchanan born 1758 and her father was John Buchanan born 1730. Does anyone have a record of these people and any info they could pass on to me.
thank you

Hi, I'm not sure if this is still live? I am related to James Nimmo (B. 1853) of Nimmo's Drapery in Dumbarton. I have a lot of info on him, photos etc, he was a mystery at times, but I think I've worked it all out pretty much ! Son of Alexander Jnr and Mary Robertson of Muiravonside, Whiterigg Farm.

I was ecxited to find this website. I am currently researching the Nimmo family of Princess Anne County, Virginia, USA. My great grandmother was Mary Susan Nimmo, descendent of Capt. James Nimmo who immigrated from Linlithgow, Scotland about 1720, so the books here tell me. I have been unable to find any info on him in Scotland. Do you know anything of his family line?

These books may shed some light for someone in the Nimmo Family. If you go into Amazon and put in Alexander Nimmo, the books will pop up. Can forward this message to the Nemmo Genelogy site as I have no access, I'm not a family member, I'm a historian of Civil Engineering and Railways, thus my interes in Alexander Nemmo Engineer.

Hi John (and all other posters},

this is a great way to present your family information. i have been searching into my own genaelogy and have hit a bit of a road block at my gg-grandparents. they were John Laird and Jessie Nimmo, married 1863 in Maryhill. Jessie's parents are listed as William Nimmo and Agnes Nimmo (M.S. McMurrich). their children have many of the same names as i see in your tree as well as some "laird names". What interests me the most is that they named one son "James Baird Laird" and i can't find baird anywhere in the tree.

If you, or anyone reading this has seen anything regarding this line of Nimmo's, please drop me a line. I have uncovered a few censuses with william nimmo and jessie nimmo and agnes nimmo's in them, would love to exchange info.

also, i do have one census where the head of the family is william nimmo "baker's foreman" with son william nimmo "baker's journeyman"

Cheers all,

JL

This is a great website about the Nimmo
History! However, I am a descendent from James Nimmo (?-April, 1733). He came from Linlithgow, Scotland to Princess Anne County, Virginia ( which is now Virginia Beach and Norfolk) in the year 1700 and married Mary Johnson of the same county. Yet, you have no information on this at all. Some of his descendants held government positions and military postings. If you have any info on him and his ancestors, please e-mail me.

Hi John, I was hoping either you or someone reading this post could help me identify the parents or siblings of my 5th great-grandmother Janet Nimmo. I have no idea of the year she was born; however, I do have some facts on her that may help.

OPR Marriages Linlithgow - “Samuel Duncan and Janet Nimmo both in this parish proclaimed in order to marriage Nov 3 – 1793”

Another search of OPR births has 4 children with the parent names of Samuel Duncan/Janet Nimmo. The children are: Helen Duncan 24/01/1795 -- Janet Duncan 08/12/1796 -- Jean Duncan 13/03/1805 -- And lastly my 4th great-grandfather Samuel Duncan 04/09/1800

And lastly, Janet Nimmo and Samuel Duncan’s son Samuel Duncan (occupation: Smith) on the 1841 Scotland Census resided with his wife Janet Flockhart and their children in Muiravonside the Place is listed as Brew-house. (They moved to Canada in 1846.)

And that is how I found you… When I did a search for “Brew-House, Muiravonside, Scotland, Your Nimmo Site was 3rd on the list.

Any help or leads anyone could give would be appreciated

I have just come across your Guest Book and have found your family history fascinating. I originate from the village of Standburn-two miles from Avonbridge and I used to cycle up the old railway line to Candiehead to deliver newspapers in the late 1940s/early 1950s. I knew some of the Nimmos of Avonbridge in particular Johnie Nimmo who used to beat my uncle from time to time at Old Tyme Dancing in the Ice Rink at Falkirk. My uncle was very good, but Johnie was the man to beat. They usually came first and second in that order. There is a very good local historian and author who would have known the Nimmo family very well and it would be a good idea to write to her directly. Her name is Joyce Legerwood, MA, and if you address your letter to her in Avonbridge,Falkirk, Stirlingshire. and put Local Historian after her name then the postman will get her. I now live in the South of England and do not have her address to hand. Another point I would like to make is that many of the small local mines were owned by Sir Adam Nimmo. Best of luck.

Correct re the fact Rachel was married twice per a later marraige cert confirming the storrier name, however Robert Ramsay was a child of the second Nimmo marraige per the birth cert. cannot vouch for the other children - but will look into it.

George Nimmo - Previous poster. That's a bit of a tall order for anyone George, based solely on your information. Recent records can only be viewed in the General Records Office in Edinburgh, not sure if the Scotland's People website get beyond 1955. The law forbids any such information being readily available to anyone but the living themselves. What we'd need to know is at least your grandparents names and where they were born. These days it is very easy to do your own research using the Scotland's People website online - for 6 pounds you get 30 credits, which sounds like a lot but it really isn't when you realise that each search (and view of a list of similar names) eats away a credit. It's also 5 credits to view a birth, marriage, death or census record. The bmd records are from 1855 onwards. You should realistically be able to get back to before 1855. If you find a Nimmo in Stirlingshire (Slamannan/Muiravonside) then you might well be a relative to myself and others using this site.

There is an error in your family tree diagrams. I am the grandson of Elizabeth Nimmo who died in Glenmavis, Airdrie just 2 years ago, and great grandson of Alexander Nimmo and Rachel Ramsay however Rachel Ramsay's maiden surname was Storrier, not Ramsay! Ramsay was the name of her first husband and all children born before Alexander Nimmo were fathered by her first husband who was called Ramsay. This is provable by examination of the birth and marriage records of Alexander Nimmo - his wife was Elizabeth Martin. I will be happy to furnish you with a copy of them by email when I return to Texas from Scotland (where I am presently). Just this week I was in Slamannan and spoke to people who actually knew Alexander "Sanny" Nimmo and who were good friends with his grandson (Jimmy Tyler aka Cagney thanks to his resemblence to the actor). Since your tree seems to dwell on the descendents of Robert Ramsay, I can assure you that they descend from a Ramsay and not a Nimmo. I am a genealogist in my own right. This is one of the lines I have examined in depth. I regret to say that the family tree on this site is in error. Any correspondence on the topic would be welcome. Regards, David Cramb Wilson.
